September DCSC : We’re doing things a little differently this month
Between World Alzheimer’s Month and Dementia Action Week, 21 to 27 September, there are some genuinely excellent free events happening across Sydney and online. Dementia Australia’s theme this year is "It’s time to talk about dementia". We can’t really argue with that.
So rather than squeeze in a DCSC on top of the all the talks and events we’re planning to go to (and speaking at!), we are just leaning into what’s already happening.
Consider this our little DCSC September field guide with lots of useful information, good people, proper conversations and plenty of opportunities to connect. We’ve included a mix of in-person and online events that are coming up, with plenty of suburbs in the mix and lots of sessions specifically about caregivers.

THURSDAY 24 SEPTEMBER
Caring for Caregivers: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Managing Dementia

Research, lived experience and clinical know-how in one room for a practical conversation about caring for someone living with dementia. Katya's on the panel with Henry Brodaty and a few others, and there'll be plenty of time for questions. Click the title for registration and details.

Making the Invisible Visible: Dementia Justice for Young Carers

Young people caring for someone with dementia are still largely invisible in research, services and support. Katya joins Isabelle Burke, plus Patti LaFleur and Liz Matthews from Lorenzo's House in the US, to talk about isolation, community and what better support could look like. Ageing and age in the workplace

Katya's talking at Diversity Fest about how we think about age at work, and what those assumptions cost people. At our August DCSC gathering, we came together at The Kimpton Margot Sydney to hear from Dr Coralie Wales on transforming personal loss into systemic advocacy, and Simon Kerrigan on practical movement strategies for maintaining independence as we age.
